Why Do We Close In The Winter?
We close in the winter months – 1st November, reopen 1st March.
Many people do ask us why we shut up shop for winter and we will do our best to explain our reasons here.
Back in 1938 when Jack Drake first created our garden, Inshriach Nursery sold only plants and so traditionally always closed for the whole winter due to the fact that all the plants were dormant.
During the winter months the weather in the Cairngorm area can be very harsh, with long periods of sub-zero temperatures. Due to our remote location, it makes it incredibly hard for customers, and staff, to get to our tearoom.
When John & Gunn Borrowman took over in 1999 and opened the tearoom in 2001, we continued to close for winter because our customer base, at the time, who were all gardeners would expect us too.
We did have a Christmas shop open during the weekends, for many years, in an attempt to keep business flowing in the winter months. However, as predicted, the bad weather would get in the way and so we have taken the decision to close every year from the 1st November until we reopen again on the 1st March.
We realise, of course, that this may be inconvenient for a lot of people but we do have to consider all the factors.
We also spend a lot of our downtime in winter maintaining our property, experimenting with cakes and undergoing tasks which we do not have time for during the season.
